Aquatic Animal & Avian Histology

Specialized Histology Services for Aquatic and Avian Species
EPL offers expert histologic processing of tissues from aquatic animals and birds, including wild and laboratory species. Our experienced histotechnicians routinely work with fish, amphibians, and avian specimens—delivering high-quality slides with precision and care. With deep experience in regulatory study support, EPL played a key role in the design and validation of original EPA and OECD Tier 1 and Tier 2 assays for endocrine disruption. We are highly proficient in preparing tissues for standardized studies such as the Fish Short-Term Reproduction Assay (FSTRA), Amphibian Metamorphosis Assay (AMA), Medaka Extended One Generation Reproduction Test (MEOGRT), Larval Amphibian Growth and Development Assay (LAGDA), and Avian Two-Generation Toxicity Test in Japanese Quail (JQTT). We can also accommodate assay modifications, alternate species, and additional tissue types.
EPL’s capabilities extend beyond the lab. Our necropsy teams and pathologists are available to travel for on-site dissections in support of environmental investigations. For small specimens such as juvenile frogs or fish, we offer whole-body sectioning techniques that allow evaluation of more than 30 tissues in just two or three slides. We also handle invertebrate samples—including bivalves, crustaceans, and corals—using specialized protocols to ensure specimen integrity and optimal histologic outcomes. At every step, our team ensures that your aquatic and avian samples are processed to the highest scientific standards.

Immunohistochemistry

Advanced Immunohistochemistry Services for Reliable, Reproducible Results
EPL provides expert immunohistochemical (IHC) and immunofluorescent (IF) labeling services to support a wide range of research applications. From routine chromogenic markers to complex multiplex chromogenic and epifluorescent labeling, we develop and optimize protocols for all tissue types, species, and target antigens. Our experienced team works with both paraffin-embedded (FFPE) and frozen specimens, using advanced autostainers including DAKO® and Leica BOND RX systems. These open, programmable platforms allow for automated or manual staining workflows, offering the flexibility and consistency needed for high-throughput studies or highly customized methods. We collaborate closely with clients and antibody vendors, tailoring each protocol with techniques such as serial antibody dilutions, antigen retrieval, and detailed troubleshooting. All optimization procedures are fully documented under EPL SOPs and performed according to Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) standards. EPL routinely optimizes antibody performance per study, antibody vendor, and lot, ensuring reliable, reproducible data for every project. We have optimized protocols for a number of antibodies, with some examples listed below:
