Aquatic Animal & Avian Histology
Specialized Histology Services for Aquatic and Avian Species
EPL offers expert histologic processing of tissues from aquatic animals and birds, including wild and laboratory species. Our experienced histotechnicians routinely work with fish, amphibians, and avian specimens—delivering high-quality slides with precision and care.
With deep experience in regulatory study support, EPL played a key role in the design and validation of original EPA and OECD Tier 1 and Tier 2 assays for endocrine disruption. We are highly proficient in preparing tissues for standardized studies such as the Fish Short-Term Reproduction Assay (FSTRA), Amphibian Metamorphosis Assay (AMA), Medaka Extended One Generation Reproduction Test (MEOGRT), Larval Amphibian Growth and Development Assay (LAGDA), and Avian Two-Generation Toxicity Test in Japanese Quail (JQTT). We can also accommodate assay modifications, alternate species, and additional tissue types. EPL’s capabilities extend beyond the lab. Our necropsy teams and pathologists are available to travel for on-site dissections in support of environmental investigations. For small specimens such as juvenile frogs or fish, we offer whole-body sectioning techniques that allow evaluation of more than 30 tissues in just two or three slides. We also handle invertebrate samples—including bivalves, crustaceans, and corals—using specialized protocols to ensure specimen integrity and optimal histologic outcomes. At every step, our team ensures that your aquatic and avian samples are processed to the highest scientific standards.
