EPL is currently seeking an experienced pathologist to provide on-site research support to the Molecular Pathology Laboratory, Comparative and Molecular Pathogenesis Branch at the National Toxicology Program, National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NTP/NIEHS).  Since 1978, the NTP has evaluated more than 2800 environmental substances for potential public health effects, making it a world leader in toxicology research.  Located in the heart of Research Triangle Park in beautiful central North Carolina, the NTP plays an important role in providing the scientific foundation for programs, activities and policies that are designed to prevent disease and promote human health.  As an NTP pathologist, you will have the opportunity to work closely with NTP/NIEHS scientists, toxicologists, and government contractors to design and review toxicologic pathology studies that will help inform regulatory policies.

Responsibilities of NTP Pathologist Include:

  • Serve as the NTP Pathologist for NTP studies
  • Provide molecular pathology support for retrospective and prospective studies to address mechanisms of toxicity and carcinogenicity
  • Contribute to project planning, experimental design, data generation, interpretation, and reporting of study data
  • Review and provide guidance to EPL and other contract laboratories, as needed, for the completion of Pathology Data Reviews (PDRs), Audits of Pathology Specimens (APSs), Quality Assessment Reviews (QAPs) of subchronic, chronic and special studies for the NTP
  • Organize and participate in NTP PDRs, Pathology Working Groups (PWGs) and Pathology Peer Reviews (PPRs), virtually or in-person
  • Direct, coordinate and track various projects in different core facilities at NIEHS/contract labs
  • Prepare and present the pathology portion of NTP Technical Reports for assigned chemicals or compounds
  • Regularly attend and participate in NTP/NIEHS and CMPB seminars, workshops, and meetings
  • Assist investigators with evaluation and interpretation of pathology endpoints for NTP and DIR studies
  • Provide mentorship and support to NTP/NIEHS trainees, as needed.
  • Promote NTP and EPL, in addition to your professional career through participation in conferences, performing speaking engagements, and publication of scientific work
  • Actively support creative approaches to achieve NTP and EPL goals

Position Requirements:

  • DVM/VMD degree or equivalent
  • Board certified by the American College of Veterinary Pathologists, preferred
  • 3-5 years of experience in toxicologic pathology is desired   
  • Strong, effective written and oral communication skills
  • Familiarity with interspecies anatomy and physiology.
  • Interact positively with NTP pathologists and other NIEHS scientists.

Position Summary:

EPL is looking for a LIMS and Validation Specialist in our Sterling, VA office. The incumbent will report to the IT Director and will be responsible for maintaining the Pristima LIMS system. The incumbent will work closely with IT and QA on validation activities and provide project support and training on various technology development projects from planning to implementation. They will also work closely with the IT, QA, and Project teams to provide feedback regarding the functionality of new and existing applications. Additionally, this role involves collaboration with responsible departments on existing or new SOPs for histopathology systems, as well as user training, documentation, and support.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with the Pathology Support Unit to establish best practices regarding the operation of the LIMS system. Conduct user training and documentation as appropriate.
  • Evaluate updates to the LIMS and assist with change control and other risk-based compliance activities that maintain the validated state of the system
  • Maintain close communication with validation team members to keep apprised of computerized system needs, impacts on computer validation, project validation status, and other relevant issues
  • Assist validation team with establishing system requirements, performing risk assessments, and with developing and performing test scripts
  • Work closely with the IT, QA, and Project teams to provide feedback regarding the functionality of new and existing applications
  • Collaborate with responsible departments on existing or new SOPs for histopathology systems
  • Provide guidance on system issues that affect the integrity of the data from the system
  • Assess histopathology system and laboratory workflow for potential process improvements involving LIMS integration
  • Point of contact for users experiencing issues within histopathology systems. Responsible for resolving issues or escalating them to the software vendor, as appropriate

Position Requirements:

  • B.S. degree in biology or related biological sciences plus 3-5 years of relevant experience in a biological sciences laboratory
  • At least 2 years’ experience working with a major LIMS
  • Good working knowledge regarding GLP Validation of computer systems in the pharmaceutical industry
  • Possess a basic knowledge of biological terminology and a familiarity with histopathology terminology
  • Must be able to work independently under the direction of senior technical personnel
  • Must be able to collaborate effectively with staff at all levels
  • Experience with validating and qualifying various software and IT systems utilized in the GLP environment
  • Strong attention to detail, technical writing, and communication skills

EPL is looking for a Technician to join the Repository Team in our Durham, NC office. As a Technician, you will join a work environment that encourages teamwork, quality, and offers opportunities for personal growth. The Technician provides necessary technical support to clients by conducting inventory of clinical specimens, organizing, and maintaining archival specimens and data, retrieving specimens to fulfill requests, and becoming familiar with database searches.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Inventory, inspect, verify, and assemble clinical specimens, data (hard copy, electronic or microfiche) in a systematic and orderly fashion
  • Verify the quality and completeness of specimens and data to ensure specifications are met for long term storage
  • File and retrieve information
  • Retrieve data or specimens for client requests
  • Maintain work area to ensure a clean, safe, and orderly facility
  • Occasional courier duties including pick-up or delivery of biological specimens, data, correspondence, mail, and supplies to clients
  • Lift and transport incoming and outgoing materials using a company vehicle
  • Become familiar with workflows and database searches

Frozen Tissue Bank and Repository Responsibilities:

  • Effectively use the Environmental Monitoring System and perform on-call duties with supervision
  • Complete daily checks of all freezers and supportive equipment and inform Supervisor of performance issues
  • Maintain laboratory by following daily cleaning procedures.
  • Assist with packaging shipments under direction of DOT/IATA certified peer
  • Always ensure sample integrity
  • Cold chain operations using dry-ice ice chests and cryo-carts

Position Requirements:

  • Associates Degree in a Life Science or High School Graduate or equivalent plus 3-5 years of relevant experience
  • Ability to pay close attention to details
  • Understand and follow written and verbal instructions
  • Communicate effectively verbally and in writing
